The circuit combines optical sensors and associated electronics on a single silicon chip, processed with standard CMOS technology. The velocity is inferred from the time delay of the appearance of an image feature at two xed locations on the chip. The circuit operates quite robustly for highcontrast stimuli over considerable irradiance and velocity ranges. With lower-contrast stimuli the output signal for a given velocity tends to decrease, while the direction selectivity is still maintained. The individual motion-sensing cells are compact, and they are therefore suited for use in dense 1D or 2D imaging arrays.

System implementations of analog VLSI velocity sensors

We present three di erent architectures that make use of analog VLSI velocity sensors for detecting the focus of expansion, time to contact and motion discontinuities respectively. For each of the architectures proposed we describe the functionality of their component modules and their principles of operation. Data measurements obtained from the VLSI chips developed demonstrate their correct pe...

The Silicon Vocal

An analog VLSI circuit model of the vocal tract is described. The vocal tract is acoustically modeled as a series of uniform cross-section tubes concatenated end-to-end. Each section of tube is modeled as an RLC circuit whose element values are determined by its area and length with the current and voltage corresponding to volume velocity and pressure in the tube. An analog VLSI circuit is desc...

Pulse-Based Analog VLSI Velocity Sensors

We present two algorithms for estimating the velocity of a visual stimulus and their implementations with analog circuits using CMOS VLSI technology. Both are instances of socalled token methods, where velocity is computed by identifying particular features in the image at di erent locations; in our algorithms, these features are abrupt temporal changes in image irradiance. Our circuits integra...

Visual Motion Computation in Analog VLSI Using Pulses

The real time computation of motion from real images using a single chip with integrated sensors is a hard problem. We present two analog VLSI schemes that use pulse domain neuromorphic circuits to compute motion. Pulses of variable width, rather than graded potentials, represent a natural medium for evaluating temporal relationships. Both algorithms measure speed by timing a moving edge in the...

Parallel analog VLSI architectures for computation of heading direction and time-to-contact

Christof Koch [email protected] We describe two parallel analog VLSI architectures that integrate optical flow data obtained from arrays of elementary velocity sensors to estimate heading direction and time-to-contact. For heading direction computation, we performed simulations to evaluate the most important qualitative properties of the optical flow field and determine the best functional ...
